NORTH SHORE TAKAPUNA LOCAL HISTORY

Takapuna on the Auckland North Shore, originally farmland the “Hurstmere” estate in 1886 and the “Pupuke” Estate in 1889. Takapuna and the beautiful Milford Beach, as well as the land surrounding Lake Pupuke became the weekend get away for wealthy Auckland businessmen who built there summer homes (batches). Later moved to the North Shore permanently, using the Auckland ferry system to travel to work in Auckland.

The famous Lake Hotel was built on the shores of Lake Pupuke in 1887. It was an classical two story masterpiece with many verandahs and an octagonal turret. It was destroyed by fire in the early years of the 20th century. Toady Takapuna is a large bustling business area with large multi-story office buildings and apartments overlooking Auckland.

Boarding the Steam tram at Halls Corner, Takapuna

Passengers boarding the steam tram at Halls Corner some time during World War I. The track had a gauge of 4ft. 8 1/2 in. To the right is Lake Takapuna Bakery (formerly Lake General Store) and Sea View Tearooms, situated at No. 2 Hurstmere Road.

The Steam Trams service commenced in 1910 and was discontinued in 1927. The service ran from Bayswater to Takapuna with a circular route around Lake Pupuke. William H. Hall purchased the General Store in 1907 and added a bakery. Hall’s Corner is named after William Hall.
